What is a shank in golf?

In golf, a "shank" is a dreaded shot that occurs when the ball is struck by the hosel of the club rather than the clubface. This results in the ball shooting off to the right (for a right-handed golfer) at a sharp angle and usually low to the ground.

Shanking a shot can be caused by a variety of factors, including poor setup, swinging too far from the outside, and improper weight distribution. It is a frustrating mistake for golfers, as it often results in a significant loss of distance and accuracy.

To correct a shank, golfers should focus on their setup, making sure they are standing the correct distance from the ball and have the proper weight distribution. Practice drills such as placing a tee just outside the toe of the club can also help improve ball striking and prevent shanking.
